Founded in Marin County California in 1988 by Virginia Stapleton, the school is distinguished by its commitment to inclusiveness and respect while providing top quality performing arts training. The school provides introduction to and continuing instruction in an array of performing arts disciplines, in two divisions: Dance and Musical Theatre. The dance division focus is on classical ballet for youth through adult and semi-professional, with seasonal instruction in other disciplines such as modern, jazz, hip hop, and European character. The centerpiece of the musical theatre division is the multi-generational Stapleton Theatre Company, which presents three full length musicals each year. The Stapleton School is one of the fastest growing dance training and performing arts institutions in the Bay Area, yet the school's unique mission and focus remain the same: using the performing arts as a tool for personal development.
